5 Steps To Prevent House Fires

Five Steps To Prevent House Fires

Smoke detector and fire alarm in action backgroundEnsure smoke detectors are installed on every level of your home and in sleeping areas. Check them on a monthly basis to make sure they are working. Additionally if you have a gas stove or furnace we recommend having two smoke alarms that are also carbon monoxide detectors as well. Working smoke detectors are required by local codes for both residential and commercial buildings. Every year people tragically lose their life because a $20 smoke alarm wasn’t installed in their home or building.

The second step to prevent house fires is to be extremely cautious of any open flames in your house. Many fires start easily and spread quickly due to an open flame. If you light candles know which rooms of the house they are in so in case you run out to do errands you remember to extinguish them before you leave. Many of the house fire restoration projects we have done have come from an open flame source such as a kitchen stove or candle that was left burning for hours.

Make sure to never use your grill inside your garage or a closed patio area as this can quickly lead to a house fire and result in a large fire damage restoration project. Additionally spare propane tanks should be stored at least 15 feet away from where you are grilling and not inside of your house which includes an attached garage. If a propane tank is stored in your garage it can leak resulting in carbon monoxide poisoning.

Another way to prevent house fires is by keeping a working fire extinguisher in your kitchen, garage and on each level of your home. House fires can spread quickly risking the loss of life and causing significant property damage. Having a fire extinguisher within a short distance can help prevent a house fire and a large fire damage restoration project.  There are several types of fire extinguishers and you can click on the link below to learn more about them.

burned down buildingFinally old extension chords, or any appliance or lights that flicker and can short out should be discarded immediately. Also when it comes to extension chords never put a 3 prong chord into a 2 prong outlet. Old worn out items and not using a proper extension cord is a quick way to make your home or commercial property susceptible to fire damage. Taking a few extra steps to inspect items that you may have had for years, even decades can help prevent you from  needing to hire a fire damage restoration company.
