If smoke or soot has entered your home, whether from a house fire, a kitchen fire, or a blocked fireplace or stove flue, then your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment could have smoke damage.

At best, smoke that’s gotten into your vents could distribute an unpleasant, smoky smell through your home. At worst, particulate contaminants in your HVAC system could lead to breathing or other health problems for you and your family.

Why Is It Important to Address HVAC Smoke Damage?

Apart from the unpleasant odor and the potential health consequences that a smoke-damaged HVAC system can cause, the chemicals in smoke and soot can be corrosive. Leaving that residue on your HVAC ducts, air handler, and condenser coils can dramatically reduce the service life of these components, requiring you to repair or replace your system sooner than you would otherwise.

An experienced smoke damage restoration company can remove harmful contaminants from your HVAC system components.

What Does HVAC Smoke Damage Repair Involve?

Smoke and Soot Removal

The first step that a smoke damage restoration company will take will be to remove solid and particulate matter from the insides of your HVAC system. If your HVAC system wasn’t running when the smoke damage occurred, the ductwork, registers, and returns in your home are probably covered with soot and smoke particles. If it was, smoke was likely pulled into your system’s air handler (blower) and condenser coils.

By using high-pressure air, cleaning sprays, and HEPA-filtered vacuum cleaning systems, damage restoration experts will thoroughly clean the ductwork, removing all traces of smoke and soot damage. They’ll perform the same cleaning of your air handler, condenser, and any other components that have been damaged.

Odor Neutralization

Even with the smoke and soot residue removed from your system, it will likely retain a burnt, smoky smell. Typically, the most effective way to remove the smoky odor is through oxidation, forcing smoke compounds to react with oxygen to render them odorless. Common oxidation methods include:

  • An ozone generator – This electrical device, placed near the air return vent in your home, will flood your system with ozone, neutralizing the compounds that are releasing the unpleasant smell.
  • Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) – This chemical is an effective odor neutralizer, oxidizing smoke and soot compounds that linger in your HVAC system. Rather than relying on the system’s fans to pull the ClO2 through your ducts and vents, the damage restoration company will use a special hose and nozzle to spray the ClO2 directly on the affected surfaces.
