How To Prepare For Storms And Hurricanes

Whether a tropical storm, Nor Easter or Hurricane proper storm preparation is critical to preventing water and flood damage to your home and or commercial property.

 

• Secure All Outdoor Items

Whether its patio furniture, grills, kids toys it’s important to remove anything outside your property that could be a projectile and damage your property. Any item that penetrates a window or door can lead to water damage to your property during a storm surge. Also, this will prevent those items from being lost or damaged as well and having to be replaced. 

• Inspect Gutters and drainage

It’s important that during storms that bring large amounts of rain that the water can properly drain away from your home or commercial property. Gutters that are free of debris and gutter extensions are critical to allow water to drain a minimum of six feet away from your property’s foundation! Ten feet is desired but in order to prevent water damage from basement flooding we recommend a minimum of six feet.

• Remove Dead Trees 

Are there any dead trees that if they fell would land on your house or property?  Dead trees are a high risk to falling on your property, your fence or outside pool or kitchen. • Board Up Windows and Doors

If you have a hurricane Category 1 or higher we recommend boarding up your windows and doors 36 to 48 hours before the storm’s arrival. If you don’t have the supplies on hand, we recommend purchasing them in advance and storing them, so you have them when they are needed.  If one window or door is blown out from a hurricane the amount of water damage and flooding could cause severe damage to your home or commercial property. 

• Sump Pump Inspection

If you have a basement, it is critically important that during a storm surge your sump pumps are working properly in order to prevent basement flooding.  A few things to consider with sump pumps:

-Is one enough for your basement? Do you get wet spots in other areas of your basement?  Have you talked with someone about a French drain for your basement?

-If you have a battery backup, are the batteries in good working order?

-Have you considered a generator to keep your sump pump and refrigerator running during a power outage?

• Critical Supplies

During a power outage from a tropical storm or hurricane you may need several days of food and clean drinking water for your family and pets!  Having MREs or some type of non-perishable food that doesn’t need refrigeration is very important. Also having several cases of bottled water on hand is not only important but lifesaving!  Finally do you have any prescriptions that need to be filled before a hurricane or storm surge?
