How To Prevent Winter Water Damage Part 3
Winter water damage requires a complete and thoughtful review of what can go wrong with a winter storm. Heavy snow, ice, power outages are all things that can bring possible damage to your home, commercial property or hospital or data center. At AfterCare Restoration we work with home owners, business owners and property managers to help proactively prepare and prevent winter water damage.
Four Key Areas To Prevent Winter Water Damage
- Check Sump Pump Function: Ensure your sump pump is working correctly before freezing temperatures arrive. How old is your sump pump? Where does the sump pump line drain too? Can you clear it of snow after a big snow storm so it doesn’t freeze and back up? Is your sump pump strong enough (½ or ¾ HP) in order to keep up from the melting storm after a winter storm? Many times basements flood after a winter storm just like during a Spring rain storm which surprises homeowners. But 8” to 24” of melting snow is a lot of water and a sump pump must be in top working order in order to keep up with that much water from melting snow. If and when you replace or upgrade your sump pump, we recommend a ½ to ¾ hp and NOT a ⅓ hp sump pump.
- Safe Alternate Heating Source: How long could your family safely stay in your home if the power went out? How long would your pipes not freeze if the power went out? Whether it’s a propane heater that is safe for home use or a gas fireplace it’s important to think about alternate heating options in the event that the power goes out.
- Safe Alternate Power Source: This is a similar question to the previous one and critical during a Winter storm. A safe alternate power source can help properly heat a home and keep refrigerators functioning properly too. Additionally with children keeping the internet on will also help with you sane as well! Never run a generator inside a home including your garage. Always make sure that they are running outside of your home and that the exhaust is going away from the property even with the wind conditions.
- Roof Conditions: It’s essential to know the condition of your roof and any weak or soft points and or missing shingles. Commercial buildings are especially prone to Winter storm damage and having them inspected before Winter storms and also ensuring that the gutter drainage is clear and can function properly is critical as well.
Whether you are a homeowner, property owner spending just a few hours inspecting your property can prevent water damage and flooding from Winter Storms. Additionally, the time savings of not having a disruption to your home or business makes all of your prevention and maintenance well worth the investment.
